It has been widely recognized that in many developing countries, education plays important roles in order to promote economic development and realize a sustainable society which pays special attention on various issues relating to human rights, environment, etc. In this open seminar, current challenges, required roles and future possibilities of education and human resource development in developing countries will be discussed with particular reference to the international efforts of promoting "Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)" which was proposed at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2001.
